Personal Musicianship Project— Covering
1) Create an outline of essential components to compose/perform.
• The song is largely homophonic, with the major polyphony occurring at the end.
• Suspensions and dynamics are essential.
• Arrangement is TTBB, as opposed to SATB.
4) Teach your piece to another person, video blog reflection on teaching process.
a) What challenges are you finding?
-It can be challenging to able to notate the true nature of the piece while taking advantage of the different voice types.
b) What are you learning?
-I am learning how to become proficient in Finale.
c) How are you learning it?
-Trial and error, experimentation, exploration.
*See Links #1 & #2
5) Educational implications, two page outline that another teacher can reference on how to teach these ideas in a classroom.
Creating a cover, especially that of a pop song, has its challenges. The pop style has distinct elements that are recognizable throughout the genre. With a cover, the composer must include these elements in a way that cites the source material as well as includes their own original work.
Lesson: Analyzing Pop Music
1. Select any pop song.
2. Analyze the form and musical elements (e.g. chord progressions, lyrics, length, tonality, etc.)
3. Discuss what is important and why.
Project: Cover a Pop Song
1. Organize students in groups.
2. Have each group select a pop song to cover.
3. Assign checkpoints to view progress of students:
-Have each student provide the song title, artist, and a brief description of the song/what it means to them/why they want to cover it.
-Have students hand in two drafts of their composition.
-Before final copy is handed in, make sure ensemble is prepared.
-Have students perform in class.
